What is Early Intervention?
Early identification includes the evaluation and treatment provided to families and their children under 3 years old who have, or are at risk for having, a disability, or delay in speech, language or hearing. A child can quickly fall behind if speech and language learning is delayed.
Why is early detection important for children with disabilities?
Research shows early detection is important because 85 per cent of brain development occurs before the age of 5. Learning difficulties can include reading dyslexia and mathematics or writing disability. ... The availability of treatment for very young children with learning difficulties is rare.
Purpose of Early Intervention
Theory: serving kids earlier reduces delays, prepares
children for school either without the need for special education or less special education services
•Congress enacted part
C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act to:
•Enhance the development of
infants and toddlers with disabilities
•Invest resources in
our youngest children now to reduce
the costs of special education later
•Maximize these
children’s potential for independent living in the future

•Cocaine,
Marijuana, and Other Illicit drugs:

attention, language,
learning
skills, and behavioral problems.
•Methamphetamine: low birth weight, decreased arousal,
a
poor quality of movement in infants
•Heroin: low birth weight
•Alcohol: most widely used
substance during pregnancy
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder “FASD”

prenatal alcohol exposure.
•Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome (FAS)
•Partial Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome
•Alcohol-Related
Neuro developmental Disorder (ARND)
•Alcohol-Related Birth
Defects (ARBD)
•Babies and children
with fetal alcohol syndrome may have:

Your child's early development is a journey
Concept of early intervention
Early intervention means doing
things as early as possible to work
on your
child's developmental, health and
support needs. Early
intervention services
give specialized support to children and
families in the early years (from birth
to school entry).
